Chapter 14

BRIDGES ARE FOR CROSSING NOT BURNING

Apparently, I’d been in the shower longer than I realized. Not only had Rafe and Jonah discussed renovations to my cottage, they’d also had time to summon a beta to locate and bring the clothes and items Jonah had stashed in the woods before shifting into his fur.

And I was so deep in my emotions, I’d failed to notice that both men smelled freshly showered.

What’s more, both smelled like Rafe’s soap.

And that brought some extremely filthy images to my mind. “Did you two shower together?”

Rafe coughs behind me, jostling me up and down with each hack. “We did not.”

I glance at Jonah, trying his best not to smile at Rafe’s antics. “But we did decide that neither of us wants the other here alone with you. So we trekked over to Rafe’s cabin, took separate showers, came back, and made breakfast. And you were none the wiser.”

“We left a note, though. In case you did come out.” Rafe points to the fridge, and sure enough, an orange sticky note hangs where none had before.

“I also got a hold of my second-in-command and apprised him of the plan to hopefully move the Kootenay packs to the Purcells.”

I nod and put a whole sausage link in my mouth. “And?”

“And he agrees it won’t be easy convincing them to leave.”

“They’ll have to if they want to steer clear of the Megazord mowing down alphas left and right,” Rafe points out.

“It’s not that simple,” Jonah insists.

“How so?”

“How would you feel if you were told you had to leave your mountains?”

Rafe’s shrug jostles me again. I might have to get another stool if I didn’t want to get motion sick. “If it’s a choice between staying alive and staying put, I’m picking staying alive.”

“And that’s a reasonable choice, but you aren’t as connected to the land as the Kootenay packs.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Jonah sighs, a deep crease forming between his brows. “You’re not of the land. Kootenay packs are.”

I put my gaze on my plate, because I know exactly where this is heading.

“And what exactly does that mean, Sigma? We’re all wolves here. We’re all connected to nature, called to it.” Rafe’s anger at the perceived insult intensifies his scent. I cast a quick glance at the neutralizer, glad to see neither wolf moved it off the burner.

“It means you’re not indigenous, Alpha. Your ancestors stole land from ours, and now you want them to leave the only home they’ve ever known, the only scrap of territory the Canadian government saw fit to give us. I’m sure you can see how that’s a pain point for a lot of us.”

The tension mounting in Rafe’s body ebbs away as he realizes Jonah wasn’t insulting him and his point is completely valid.

“If it’s to save lives, I would think—”

“It’s the principle, Rafe,” I say softly before turning my gaze fully to Jonah. “Let’s play it out and assume none of the Kootenay packs leave. What’s the worst possible outcome?”

“Last count, eight packs live on that range.
